Artist Spotlight: Masu McLemore

Love for your craft is one thing, but the level of dedication adds an entirely new meaning to the word…arrist-titleMasu, you are a self-taught artist with beautiful visions, and you have a lot to show for it.  Was there inspiration for you to start painting such as family or another artist…or was it just a hobby that grew into a passion?
My father is an artist, my grandma is an artist, my grandfather is a movie director and the list continues. I was born into a family of artists in many different forms, and I just happened to choose the fine art path.
I originally wanted to be a singer/songwriter, and I’d draw to relieve stress. I ended up getting really good at drawing and enjoyed it more so I stopped writing, but I’m also a great writer. It’s a hidden talent that I only really share with loved ones.

What was the most difficult thing for you starting out as an artist?
Finding my style was the most difficult thing for me. It’s hard trying to put all your thoughts onto paper and/or a canvas.

I have noticed that a lot of your pieces have a musical aspect to them. Why these specific artists, and which piece is your favorite thus far?
I pick artists based off of what I like and not what everyone else likes. I don’t really listen to many of today’s new artists because their music lacks substance to me. So I pick artists that have moved me in some way and have gotten me out of a funk at some point in my life. My favorite piece is my To Pimp a Butterfly painting (Shown bottom right) Blavity  officially has it in their art gallery, but I hold it near and dear to my heart.
It’s also the first painting where I introduced my signature monarch butterfly.

You attended Otis College of Art and Design and the School of Visual Arts. What made you choose a different route, and do you think that this change was for the better?
I left Otis specifically because I was no longer happy there, and I was no longer happy in LA. Going to SVA gave me a lot of clarity, and it actually pushed me to work harder. It was a difficult time, but it did in fact change me into the artist I am today.
masu quote.jpg

How do you feel about everything that is going on in the world today? You have a Black Lives Matter inspired painting that I love. Tell me about it.
Black Lives Matter Painting ArtbySu
All the violence going on isn’t something I really like to speak on. Gun violence has taken away a lot of my family members and friends so I decided to let my art speak for itself. It really just symbolizes pain and hurt. The butterfly is something precious and delicate and a gun is exactly what it is a weapon of mass destruction. In this piece the butterfly is me that’s why the piece is called When You Murdered Them, a Part of Me DIED Too.  Every black and brown person killed I feel the pain, I feel the hurt, like them I feel.

ink title.jpg
You have a full sleeve that includes part of an Audrey Kawasaki painting, Forever Still. It’s beautiful! What inspired this?
I have multiple tattoos, which is a bit crazy to me at times. My sleeve is inspired by my life, it represents me specifically. All of my ink has to do with something that happened in my life. I love flowers, sunflowers and roses specifically; elephants are my favorite animal and I respect Buddhism and their worship towards Ganesha, and Audrey Kawasaki is one of my favorite artists. All that tied with henna like designs is how my sleeve came about. I also have a hummingbird on my neck, writing on my right wrist, a rose on my right hand, a Michelangelo quote and piece on my right forearm, roses on my right wrist, and angel wings on the back of my neck which all symbolize something, but I’d be talking forever if I explained each one.

creative mind.jpgDescribe your dream art studio…
My dream art studio consists of floor to ceiling windows, all white, wooden floors, and high ceilings. I want nothing but greenery on the outside, something like my own forest that I can stare at as I paint and the breeze hits my face. I want to be able to watch the bees, the butterflies, and the birds sing. I want a white crocheted hammock where I can rest and read on my down time and an upstairs loft where my bed and other essentials will be. Lots of crystals, dream catchers, and candles will surround my space keeping all the negative energy away from me and my art. Also, no shoes will be worn in my space. No outsiders will be allowed in my space unless something special is taking place. It’ll be like my secret sanctuary.

What is your next move? Any current/upcoming projects that you can speak on?
I have a lot of moves that I can’t speak of currently, but I can say look out for a solo art show coming this December.

The Interview | Alex Undone

Art is an expression…A showcase of creative skill & imagination. Visual seduction to be appreciated for its beauty. Bringing emotion to the surface and leaving you with a lasting impression. A textured foundation with a beautiful silhouette…manifesting in her dreams.
I introduce to you Alexandra Cunningham.
A model…An artist.

I came across Alex in the YouTube video “PROMBOYISH: The Ultimate Tomboy Prom Lookbook” on Ari Fitz’s TOMBOYISH channel.

My initial thoughts were…Wow, she is GORGEOUS! Who is this woman?  Her look is really different…What’s her story? So, after a little digging and sending of emails …

The Interview

Alex_MountainTop.jpg

Alex_Title

Where are you from, and what is your current city?
GERMANY RAISED ME… L.A. CHANGED ME.

How was your experience growing up in Germany?
I WOULDN’T CHANGE IT FOR THE WORLD. GERMANY IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE HOME. GROWING UP AS A MILITARY BRAT OVERSEAS TAUGHT ME TO APPRECIATE OTHER CULTURES AND OUR DIFFERENCES IN SOCIETY.

You most definitely bridge the gap between women’s fashion and menswear. Did you anticipate this when you first got into the industry, or did it catch you by surprise?
I KNEW MY LOOK WAS DIFFERENT FROM MOST GIRLS, BUT I DIDN’T KNOW THERE WAS A WORD FOR IT. I WAS FIRST INTRODUCED TO THE TERM “ANDROGYNY” A FEW YEARS AGO.  I WILL SAY, WHO AND WHERE I AM AT THIS POINT IN MY LIFE FEELS LIKE THE CLOSEST I’VE EVER BEEN TO MY TRUE SELF. I’M EDGY. I STAND OUT, AND I’M 110% OK WITH IT.

Outside of modeling, you are certainly an artist. How long have you been painting, and what inspires you to create?
TWO YEARS OR SO MAYBE? I STILL FEEL LIKE A NEWBIE TO THE ART WORLD. I’M LESS FOCUSED ON SOMEONE INSPIRING ME AND MORE FOCUSED ON EXPERIMENTING, HAVING FUN, AND LEARNING ALONG THE WAY.

So, your first art show was last August. That’s huge! Congratulations on your success! How was that experience for you?
IT WAS NERVE WRECKING AND AMAZING AT THE SAME TIME. I THINK IT CAN BE HARD FOR ANY ARTIST TO PUT THEIR WORK OUT THERE. YOU NEVER KNOW HOW IT’S GOING TO BE RECEIVED. I SUPPOSE THAT’S ALSO THE BEAUTY OF IT…..
Art Show_New

Feeling and emotion are definitely a part of any craft, whether it be modeling or painting. In photographs…It shows through your facial expressions…it’s in your eyes. Painting…expression is in every stroke. You once wrote…
You_Once_Wrote_Script
Alex_Rock
What was your breakthrough moment when you started channeling all of that creative energy?
THERE IS NO BREAKTHROUGH MOMENT. THERE IS NO MAGIC “AHA” WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE YOU’RE THERE NOW. IT’S GRADUAL. IT’S A SLOW PROCESS. IT HAS TAKEN ME YEARS TO GET HERE, AND EVERY SINGLE DAY I WORK TO BETTER MYSELF, EXPRESS MORE, AND GET IT TO TRANSLATE THROUGH MY MEDIUM OF CHOICE.
How has this new way of thinking changed you as a person?
EVENTUALLY, YOU REACH A POINT IN YOUR LIFE WHERE YOU ARE JUST FED UP. YOU’RE TIRED OF NOT SEEING RESULTS, TIRED OF NOT BEING WHERE YOU WANT TO BE. I HAD TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR SOME OF MY ACTIONS (OR LACK THEREOF) AND REALLY GO FOR WHAT IT WAS I WANTED. I’M STILL ON THAT JOURNEY…..

Alex Undone

On your journey to personal growth, what new aspects did you bring into your life?
CHANGE AND SACRIFICE ARE ESSENTIAL. GROWTH IS PAINFUL, AND  YOU WILL QUICKLY DISCOVER WHO’S THERE TO PUSH YOU FORWARD OR FIGHTING TO KEEP YOU BACK.

According to Jessie

Header

Jessie_WindowView

After a little Q & A session last week, I figured today would be the perfect day to talk about Mr. Jessie T. Usher. Can you say Man Crush Monday? This young actor is really making a name for himself. As the star of the hit series Survivor’s Remorse, portraying Cam Calloway, Jessie has gained quite a fan base.

The series starts out telling the story of the Cam & the rest of the Calloway family after he signs a multimillion-dollar contract with an Atlanta basketball team. Now in 2016, the show is on its third season.

If you haven’t seen the show, you are MISSING OUT!

Season 3 of Survivor’s Remorse airs July 24, 2016.

Fun Fact: Jessie might kill it on-screen as basketball star Cam Calloway, but when I asked what some of his favorites were, he stated…

“As far as sports go, my favorite to watch is football.”

Steven Hiller was portrayed by Will Smith in the 1996 Oscar-winning film Independence Day. You know the story right? Hostile aliens try to take over, and the military tries to stop them? Well, Jessie has been busy shooting in the deserts of Albuquerque, New Mexico. He will be starring as Dylan Hiller, son of Steven Hiller, in Independence Day: Resurgence!

The official release date for Independence Day: Resurgence is June 24, 2016.  Have you watched the trailer? If not, check it out right here!

Last year, Jessie stated that as far as upcoming projects, he would use  his “fourth quarter move”. He was looking for something toward the end of the year, but it had to “fit”.

Towards the end of this year, you will be seeing him in another movie entitled Almost Christmas. This Universal Pictures film is definitely promising.

The_PlotAfter the passing of their mother, a less than sane family gathers for Christmas. All that is asked of them is to get a long….for 5 long days. They can do it…right? Not without some difficulty….ok…I lied. A lot of difficulty!

The_CastKimberly Elise, Omar Epps, Danny Glover, Romany Malco, Mo’Nique, Nicole Ari Parker, J.B. Smoove, Gabrielle Union, DC Young Fly and of course…Jessie T. Usher!

With an all-star lineup like this, Almost Christmas is definitely on my wish list.

The release date for this film has been set for November 11, 2016.

Fun Facts: When I asked Jessie who inspired him the most, he said his parents. Jessie has been accomplishing great things since he was a kid: Being little Simba in the Lion King on Broadway in New York & performing in Shakespeare in D.C.

Everyone has a hobby, and every time I turn around…Jessie has a camera in his hand! I wanted to know what got him into photography….So of course I asked. His answer…

Jessie: “My desire to start directing. I figured it’d be a good idea to start looking at things thru a lens.”

Jessie_Photography

“Photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place. I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”
– Elliot Erwitt

Fun Facts: Not only does he enjoy photography, but Jessie studied Culinary Arts when he moved out to California from Maryland, and he loves Indian food.

Jessie, congratulations on all your accomplishments! You are doing so many great things, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for you. Also, thank you for taking the time to participate in my Q & A. You’re a sweetheart.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it… Is to bring positive energy into your life.
Motivate yourself and be consistent.
No change worth claiming comes from sitting still.

Let me introduce you to…Alexis Branch

She’s a Virginia native but long time A-Town  representer with crazy ambition & a voice to match! This R&B Artist/Entertainer can stop you in your tracks, and now she’s killin’ the fitness game!  I wanted to know what has been driving this blue haired beauty.

Thanks Lex for letting me get in your head for a little bit.

QNA

What jump started you in fitness, and what was your initial goal?

I initially got into fitness because I wanted my stamina on stage to last while performing.  I had gotten a little heavy and also wanted to tighten up. My goal was to get slim down and tone up.

How did fitness change your life?
Fitness changed my life immensely…not only because I became healthier, but I moved forward and pursued my certification in personal training. Now I have an additional career path.
I’ve branded
reasons
Now I’m able to help others achieve their fitness goals as well.
Alexis Branch

Did achieving your fitness goals help with your performances music wise?
Absolutely! I just went solo, and the way the music industry is set up… It’s 10% talent and 90% everything else, with image being a major factor.  I am more confident on stage and proud of my body because I’ve worked extremely hard for it.  It encourages others to want to be healthy and fit, and all I’ve wanted to do was encourage people. Whether it be through fitness or music or both…to be the best version of themselves.

What is your most memorable moment involving your fitness training?

My most memorable moment involving my fitness is tough because I have a few….One would have to be my videos.  They’ve all gone viral because I do extreme stunts.  Once I gained the strength to do stunts… I started doing videos, and the love started flowing in.  I love that people are inspired and try the stunts to show me.  Strength is beautiful.

GAINSAlexis Branch

With the help from my former trainer and mentor @BodyByDemond, we built a butt from scratch! I had absolutely NO booty and now I’m curvy and loving it.  Squats and different squat/lunge variations are to thank for that.

Heavier Weights

One of my favorite exercises would have to be on the squat machine.  Instead of doing it the normal way…with my back against the machine, I turn around and face the machine and do my squats that way.

3 “Not So Common” Nutrition Tips

Hmm not so common… I don’t do cleanses. I hear everyone doing a fitness cleanse, but I read an article that shined light on how silly they actually sound.  To cleanse your body of something like alcohol or drugs makes sense, but to cleanse yourself of food is silly.  There are vital nutrients that are needed for your body in the foods that you’re “cleansing” yourself from.  That also goes to say that your liver just isn’t doing its job if you’re needing a cleanse lol.

How do you push yourself when you are feeling a little less than motivated?
I remind myself that I want to be…

Naked All Summer

I want to wake up, throw on whatever I want to wear and not worry if I’m going to look right or feel comfortable in it.  If you stay ready, you’ll never have to GET ready!  If all of my clothes burned to the ground, I want to walk out the house bare naked with no worries.

What are your future goals?

For music, I’m finishing a mixtape, album and plan on touring.  Specifically overseas.  For fitness I plan on doing plenty of fitness tours and boot camps. I’m coming out with my own fitness app, workout sweat band, and fitness DVD.  I plan to be a household name!

When is the last time you stood in the mirror and said to yourself…

ilovemybody.jpg

It could have been this morning… or you might still be trying to come up with an answer. If you’re still thinking, then it has been too long. Taking care of your body is a way of loving your body. There is no shortcut to an amazing physique. You have to put in hard work to get great results.

Sometimes you might need a little extra…Inspiration.

When you are looking for a personal trainer, you want someone who can deliver that extra push and guide you in the right direction.

I would like to introduce you to Atlanta’s own Malcolm Wilson. Training since June 2012, Malcolm holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology, a ISSA Master of Fitness Sciences Certification, and he is a former Newberry College (Newberry, SC) football player. IMG_0882.PNG

q and a

What made you interested in personal training?

“I have been into fitness since I was 13 years old. To keep me out of trouble, my uncle would take me to the gym and train me. Next, I began playing football, and this kept me around fitness. I wanted to be the best athlete that I possibly could, so I knew I had to take my workouts to another level. I began training with an athletic trainer, and he trained me from high school all the way through college. I would perfect every mechanic of training that I was taught; on how to become bigger, faster, stronger, more explosive, and I would teach them to my teammates in high school and in college. It was in sharing what I had been taught through the intense experience of working out with my trainer that I found an interest in training others. It was because he helped to push me to the height of my athletic ability, that he impacted my life. I wanted to share my passion, and help others to reach their true fitness potential in the same way. Inside of every repetition, every set, every exercise, every drill, and every workout was a challenge, and I loved every second of overcoming each one. From there, my family, friends, and random people would always ask to workout with me or ask for some kind of workout advice. As I took on clients with non-athletic fitness goals, I had to learn the difference between personal training and athletic training. In order to perfect my craft doing both, I earned my personal training certification . It was the mentality that my trainer instilled in me that gave me the greatest feeling in the world. It was the crazy workouts that taught me the things I needed to know, and it was the combination of the two that changed my life and made me want to share my training with the world.”

tire_2

What has fitness done for you?

I have been working out since the age of 13, so fitness has always been apart of my life. It has molded me, both physically and mentally. Physically, fitness has made my muscles bigger, my body stronger, and my legs faster. I love my physique and how I can perform physically, but it is what fitness has done to my mind that I love the most. Mentally, fitness has sharpened my mind to take on and handle anything.

What are your future goals?

I have three future goals that I am currently working towards. There are alot of trainers in the city of Atlanta, and I want to be best….I want to change the profession of fitness and change as many peoples lives as I can in the process.

To set my services apart from everyone else, I have began developing a new training system that will deliver a more effective workout for my clients. Next, I want to take my new training system and open my own gym/training facility and continue to spread my training throughout the city.

Lastly, I recently got into fitness modeling, it was a great experience and I would like to do more of it.

iphone.jpgMost memorable moment? (Training a Client or Personal Moment)

This came from my first training job, and I was working for LA Fitness at the time. I began to constantly film my workouts and post them to Instagram and Facebook. I would always come up with the wildest but fun workout ideas in order to show my athletic ability on my posts. After a few months of this, an Adidas representative from Germany reached  out to me on Instagram and invited me to New York to do a photo shoot modeling their new line of training gear for the upcoming seasons. It was because they loved my posts that they wanted me to put my talent on film in their new gear. Going to New York and modeling for Adidas was the most fun thing I have ever done, mainly because I literally got to workout in front of a camera for 10 hours. I loved every second of the process because working out took me to a place that I had never been to do something that I had never done before, it just shows that hard work really does pay off.

3  “Not So Commom” Nutrition Tips

1. Consume essential fats in order to burn body fat
There are two types of fat, essential fat (good fat) and saturted fat (bad fat). A lot of people would think that in order to lose fat they will need to remove it from their diet. However, eating this macronutrient can actually help you to metabolize and burn more fat. With this being said, everyone needs a healthy balance of the three macronutrients; protein, fats, and carbs in their diet.  It is best to meet your protein needs first and then adjust your fat and carbohydrate intake accordingly.  Eating more protein and essential fat means eating less carbohydrates.  This will reduce your overall insulin (fat cell creator and storer) levels. Lower insulin levels allow your body to use fat cells for energy and fuel your muscles during your workout instead of storing them in your body.

2. Avoid eating “white foods”
White foods refer to processed and/or refined foods such as white flour, white rice, white sugar, white bread, pasta, crackers, and cereal. This excludes foods such as onions, cauliflower, and white beans; this is because these are natural foods and they rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients.  On the other end of the spectrum, processed ”white foods” have been stripped of their nutritional value and have almost no health benefits.  While these foods may taste good, they are not satisfying to the body and therefore leave you over fed and undernourished. This means you will be hungry because your body is craving the nutrients it is not receiving, this usually leads to over eating and eventual weight gain. So be sure to stay away from processed foods and instead eat more whole and natural foods to deliver much needed nutrients to your cells.

3. Cook with more herbs and spices instead of cooking with salts
We get an overwhelming amount of sodium in our diets. Too much sodium causes water retention, higher blood pressure, and can lead to athlersclorosis (hard arteries). In order to aviod this, it is best to cook with more herbs and spices instead. This is because herbs and spices provide healthy antioxidants, boost the metabolism, detox the body, and aide in weight loss. Cooking with too much salt and consuming it for too long without exercise wil increase blood pressure and lead to heart disease. Herbs and spices such as: garlic powder, ginseng, mint leaves, curry, cumin, basil, allspice, caynne pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg or ginger to name a few while having health benefits can also replace the taste of salt.  Cooking with herbs and spices can help with weight loss.

1 Common Weight Loss Misconception

Once I begin training people, it is often that I hear my clients say that they didn’t eat anything during the day because they are trying to “lose weight”. This has to be one of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to weight loss today for two reasons. First because our body has its own survival mechanism for periods of low caloric intake When you don’t eat food your body has to work and survive with little to no calories. In response to this our bodies go into “famine” or survival mode and the body will slow its metabolism (the rate at which your body burns calories at rest) down in order to hold onto any incoming calories in order to protect itself. Instead of starving ourselves, it is better to eat several properly portioned meals a day within two to three hours of one another in order to keep our bodies out of survival mode.  This will also boost our metabolism and burn calories that will be used for energy. Once you train your body to eat this way,  your body will be able to produce and utilize more energy for all daily activities. Second, we have to understand that calories are a measurement for the amount of energy that is inside anything we eat/and or drink. So it is important to fuel our bodies with proper nutrition in order for us to have energy to carry out our everyday functions. Eating more regularly is how we will properly lose weight, not by starving our body.

Artist Spotlight: Dre Price

Vision is a captivating thing.  It opens your eyes….It evokes emotion within you…. & the end result could even bring about a new perspective, but….when is the last time your vision consumed you?  A moment so passionate….A moment so emotional?
dre header
I introduce to you the talented Andréa Price.

Because her vision consumed her….We now know her artistry….Dre Price Art.

She’s Tennessee native, but long time H-Town representer with crazy creativity!
I came across Dre back in 2013 when she portrayed a very bold character named Marty in a web series called Girl Play.

I have kept up with her since then, and she has accomplished so many amazing things.

I can honestly say that she is one of my favorite artists, and I specifically wanted her for the first Artist Spotlight segment! Thank you Dre for letting me get in your head for a little bit.
q & A
Your artwork is truly amazing, and very different from any that I have seen. What inspires you, and how do you stay motivated?
“Thank you! Life inspires me. I’m in a place right now, where I am using my daily experiences, photography and dreams to influence my work.  I feel the work transitioning into a more personal space.”

I read in your bio on dreprice.com that after your accident in 2011, Dre Price Art was founded. Is there a difference between Dre Price and Andréa Price?

“No, same person.  Dre is a nickname that friends and family call me. It seemed natural to go by that. Dre is also a bit androgynous, so I appreciated the added mystique of it.”

You have your foot in so many doors….Whether it be acting, painting, modeling, illustrating or photography. Are you working on any new projects that you can speak on?
“I was exploring a lot of artistic mediums in my past.  Experimentation is important in finding your voice as an artist. Visual art and photography are my focus now. I’m working on a few videos and some paintings.  I’ll be releasing some original smaller works on my site, dreprice.com very soon.  I also, plan to have a solo exhibition sometime in 2016 as well as many travels.”

You are a very soulful woman that has a way with words. What is your favorite quote to live by?

“There are so many quotes I’ve fallen in love with.  One that rings loudly right now is, ‘Comparison is the thief of joy.’- Theodore Roosevelt.  It’s a lesson that took me a long time to learn and something I encourage everyone to grasp.  You’ll be a much happier person for it.”

Throughout life, I am sure you have gained so much from all your experiences.
What would you say are the top three most important things to you?

“I truly have.  Three things, I’ve gained from my life experiences are:

1. Love as much as you can.

2. Believe in yourself.

3. Don’t wait to travel the world.”
