Motivation Sundae: 10 Ways to Relieve Holiday Stress

MotivationSundaeLogo_Diasehs

November has definitely arrived, and it came with physical and emotional holiday baggage. It generally starts with busier work weeks and ends with last-minute holiday shopping.

Today I’m going to give you 10 surefire ways to relieve stress during the holiday season!

1 | Take a hike! I don’t mean that in a harsh way, but literally put on your favorite sneakers and get moving in the morning. Due to the fall weather changes, the weather in the morning is less humid and the atmosphere makes a great start for any busy day.

Motivation: A killer playlist! You can make your own or snag one from Apple Music or Spotify.

2 | Feeling overwhelmed? Find a nice stopping point, kick back and watch a holiday favorite! There’s nothing that helps me more when I’m stressed than getting a good laugh in! All of the Home Alone movies get me in a better mood.

Motivation: Before you start a project, plan a good stopping point. This way you have your break to look forward to!

3 | Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Get the family involved! We all have the tendency to try play superwoman during the holiday season. Having someone help you not only lessens your stress, but it also gives you a chance to bond with those you love.

Motivation: Look on Pinterest and find some cute recipes or decoration DIY’s to do with the family or something that adds a little romance for you and your significant other while still getting things done. Wine tasting while gift wrapping sounds good to me!

4 | Relax with the girls! When engulfed in things to do, you sometimes forget that you’re not the only one who is struggling. Phone some friends or your best friend for a spa date! This will give you a chance to relax and maybe even be each other’s therapist for the day. Nothing makes dishpan hands look better than a fresh manicure.

Motivation: Check out the new holiday colors from Essie and OPI. That will definitely get you in the mood to head to the nail salon!

5 | Honey I’m home! It’s time to get a good cuddle session in. Grab your boo and snuggle up! Hugging, kissing and other physical acts increase oxytocin levels. This reduces blood pressure, stress and anxiety.

Motivation: Send your love a cute/steamy text mid day to prepare them for later activities. This will also let them know that you were thinking about them, and that is a pick me up for anyone!

6 | Light a candle! This might seem so simple, but it really does work. My favorite candle has always been the Mahogany Teakwood candle by White Barn. You can find them at Bath and Body Works. The scent reminds me of cologne, and it’s so soothing! The scent instantly gets me in a good mood.

Motivation: Kill two birds with one stone! Find a scent you love and play it up in your holiday decor this season. You are now more relaxed and have a new decorative twist! Most three wick candles have beautiful containers that match any aesthetic.

7 | Warm it up! For most of us, from birth to adulthood, there is one thing that stays consistent, and that is the love of wrapping up in a blanket! Grab your favorite blanket or comforter and throw it in the dryer just long enough for it to hold and some heat. While it’s in the dryer set up your area of relaxation. Once you pull it out of the dryer, immediately wrap yourself in it. Kick back and relax! Blankets are a sense of security. The warmth will be soothing and help reduce anxiety.

8 | Spend time with your pet! Take a moment to relax with them or take them along for the ride while running a few errands. This will give you some company and get them out of the house for a bit.

Motivation: Grabbing something from Starbucks or Dutch Bros? Take your dog with you! Puppuccinos are a real thing. It’s whipped cream to us and heaven to them.

9 | Everybody clap your hands! I️ know this one may sound a bit strange, but it definitely works! Clapping your hands increases circulation and activates receptors in your hands. This fires up parts of the brain and gets that noodle going!

Motivation: If you don’t want to just stand around clapping, bring in the little ones! Grab your child, cousin, niece or nephew and teach them how to play Patty Cake or Miss Mary Mack. This will be amusing for the both of you and 9 time out of 10 will make you laugh. #winning

10 | Take a hot bath/shower! This one is a must for me and many others. Hot water will ease your mind and also soothe stiff/sore muscles. Grab your favorite bath bomb and soak your stress away.

Motivation: Drop by your local Lush location or visit Lush.com and load up on all the bath goodies! My favorite bath bombs right now are: Shoot for the Stars and Sex Bomb.

NOVEMBER | CREATIVITY, SUCCESS & BALANCE

HAPPY NOVEMBER LOVES! Let me start this post with a HUGE apology. I have truly been missing in action. Given, I could have given a warning, but I have my reasons which I will share right now…

  1. Work has been the biggest pain in my butt since my childhood vaccinations.
  2. Your girl needed time to reflect, relax and have some peace of mind.
  3. My mind was in a creative slump, and I needed time to regroup. Pinterest wasn’t helping me.

Due to all of these things, I went on a temporary hiatus from the second week in September to the second week in October. #HelloVacation

During this time, I discovered many things about myself, remembered a few things to help me get back on track and had a influx of creative ideas. I am back now, and I have a new outlook for the month of November. This month I want to embrace creativity as a whole. I don’t want to just focus on creativity within my blog, on Instagram, on Facebook, on Twitter or on YouTube. I want to expand my creativity to all platforms including my regular every day life. I’ve gotten back into doing a few projects, and I purchased some new camera equipment, so that has definitely given me a boost to get some new things done.

My work schedule has gotten back to a normal and consistent baseline as of lately. Now I have more time to physically sit down at my desk, get my life together and actually create some worthy content. I want to get back into the habit of posting at least twice a week and recording videos regularly. I’ve started doing so, but I need to be a little bit more consistent. Progress is what makes the world go around, and as long as I am progressing, I can be happy.

This month I also want to focus on success. Too often I find myself critiquing little things about my content or things at work, etc. I’ve come to the conclusion that I focus more on my failures than my successes. That is the WRONG thing to do when you are trying to get some pep in your step! There was a tip I learned a while back about making to do lists.

*Pauses to put on glasses and clear throat*

Instead of doing the traditional to do list as one long column of things that need to be done and checking them off as you go… you should make two columns/lists! The first column/list should be a to do list and the second should be a done list. Thank you Lilly Singh for making my life so much easier. This way, at the end of the day, you can see all the things that you HAVE accomplished and not just focus on the things that you HAVE NOT accomplished. All people/ideas in history that have been successful have reached that success with few or many drawbacks. No one or thing is perfect, and that is definitely something to remember.

The last focus point that I want to expand on today is balance. I love agendas, and anything that I can write down my little notes on because sometimes my phone doesn’t cut it. I am an old-fashioned pen and paper type of girl when it comes to planning out my weeks, months and year for that matter. Last year, I got a Big Happy Planner from a company called Me and My BIG Ideas, and I fell in love with it! This year I did the same thing, and it definitely helps me in the category of balance. Another part of my journey to balance is knowing when to just say NO. I’ve always been that person to get the job done, always think of other people before myself, never say never, and always be the one to find the answer.

Majority of the time these are all great characteristics to have… especially when you are in your mid 20’s and work for the government. *raises hand slowly*

However, it came to the point where I was saying so much “yes” and not enough “no” that my body started to shut down mentally and physically. I would always be tired, I would feel sick, I would always have a chip on my shoulder, and that’s just not the person that I am. I’ve gotten to the point now where if my body is telling me no and I know that I can afford to have time to myself, I will definitely take it, and it is paying off tremendously! #healthandwellness #selflove

AUGUST | Happiness, Love & Reflection

AUGUST DIASEHS

HAPPY AUGUST LOVES! Let me give you a little personal fact…I have always been the type of person to write down my goals. Whether they be personal, work related, long term or short term. There is a certain power that stands behind writing down your goals and aspirations. Writing them down is the first step to them becoming a reality and not just a wishful thought. I decided to start sharing them with you for two reasons:

  1. Sharing your goals with others is a great way to keep yourself on track. Self motivation is key, but this will also act as that little extra push. I used to keep a journal for all of my goals, but this way is a bit more effective for me.
  2. By sharing your goals you could help someone else with their own personal journey. Whether it be the process in which you go about starting your new journey or the beautiful outcome of achieving your goals…someone…somewhere…will appreciate it.

This month I will embrace happiness. Many things have changed as of recently, and I must say that my spirits have definitely been uplifted. A big part of this change has been meditation. I used to mediate quite often, but with a crazy work schedule and change in sleeping habits, that started to be a less than consistent practice. I have gone back to mediating every morning before I start getting ready. I start with a stretching session and meditate for about 5-10 minutes to follow. This time frame depends on what time I have to leave the house. This may seem like a very short period of time, but that’s truly all you need sometimes.

This month I will love deeply. Last month I focused on self love. That is now a given aspect of my daily life. I will now focus on the true selfless love that comes with being in a relationship. There is an old saying…You must first love yourself before you can truly give your love to another person. This is very true because many relationships fail due to insecurity or personal, deeply rooted issues. I am happy with myself. I love everything that I have become and have the potential to be. With that being said, I also love my girlfriend, and she deserves the world. This month will be the start of something amazing for us. See you in 11 days babe.

My last focal point of the month will be cherishing shared moments. Far too often, we as people look back in search of memories. I mean really wrecking our brains in search of a memory, and in that search we sometimes have pieces missing. I want to have vivid memories of moments shared with others. Photographs are great to look at, but the thoughts and emotions you have when looking back are most important. I have tons and tons of photographs from childhood, college, events and life’s random moments, but not many people take time to enjoy the moment they are currently in. They spend more time trying to digitally capture that moment at the time than actually live in it. This month I choose to live in the moment.

When is the last time you stood in the mirror and said to yourself…

ilovemybody.jpg

It could have been this morning… or you might still be trying to come up with an answer. If you’re still thinking, then it has been too long. Taking care of your body is a way of loving your body. There is no shortcut to an amazing physique. You have to put in hard work to get great results.

Sometimes you might need a little extra…Inspiration.

When you are looking for a personal trainer, you want someone who can deliver that extra push and guide you in the right direction.

I would like to introduce you to Atlanta’s own Malcolm Wilson. Training since June 2012, Malcolm holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology, a ISSA Master of Fitness Sciences Certification, and he is a former Newberry College (Newberry, SC) football player. IMG_0882.PNG

What made you interested in personal training?

“I have been into fitness since I was 13 years old. To keep me out of trouble, my uncle would take me to the gym and train me. Next, I began playing football, and this kept me around fitness. I wanted to be the best athlete that I possibly could, so I knew I had to take my workouts to another level. I began training with an athletic trainer, and he trained me from high school all the way through college. I would perfect every mechanic of training that I was taught; on how to become bigger, faster, stronger, more explosive, and I would teach them to my teammates in high school and in college. It was in sharing what I had been taught through the intense experience of working out with my trainer that I found an interest in training others. It was because he helped to push me to the height of my athletic ability, that he impacted my life. I wanted to share my passion, and help others to reach their true fitness potential in the same way. Inside of every repetition, every set, every exercise, every drill, and every workout was a challenge, and I loved every second of overcoming each one. From there, my family, friends, and random people would always ask to workout with me or ask for some kind of workout advice. As I took on clients with non-athletic fitness goals, I had to learn the difference between personal training and athletic training. In order to perfect my craft doing both, I earned my personal training certification . It was the mentality that my trainer instilled in me that gave me the greatest feeling in the world. It was the crazy workouts that taught me the things I needed to know, and it was the combination of the two that changed my life and made me want to share my training with the world.”

What has fitness done for you?

I have been working out since the age of 13, so fitness has always been apart of my life. It has molded me, both physically and mentally. Physically, fitness has made my muscles bigger, my body stronger, and my legs faster. I love my physique and how I can perform physically, but it is what fitness has done to my mind that I love the most. Mentally, fitness has sharpened my mind to take on and handle anything.

What are your future goals?

I have three future goals that I am currently working towards. There are alot of trainers in the city of Atlanta, and I want to be best….I want to change the profession of fitness and change as many peoples lives as I can in the process.

To set my services apart from everyone else, I have began developing a new training system that will deliver a more effective workout for my clients. Next, I want to take my new training system and open my own gym/training facility and continue to spread my training throughout the city.

Lastly, I recently got into fitness modeling, it was a great experience and I would like to do more of it.

iphone.jpgMost memorable moment? (Training a Client or Personal Moment)

This came from my first training job, and I was working for LA Fitness at the time. I began to constantly film my workouts and post them to Instagram and Facebook. I would always come up with the wildest but fun workout ideas in order to show my athletic ability on my posts. After a few months of this, an Adidas representative from Germany reached  out to me on Instagram and invited me to New York to do a photo shoot modeling their new line of training gear for the upcoming seasons. It was because they loved my posts that they wanted me to put my talent on film in their new gear. Going to New York and modeling for Adidas was the most fun thing I have ever done, mainly because I literally got to workout in front of a camera for 10 hours. I loved every second of the process because working out took me to a place that I had never been to do something that I had never done before, it just shows that hard work really does pay off.

3  “Not So Commom” Nutrition Tips

1. Consume essential fats in order to burn body fat
There are two types of fat, essential fat (good fat) and saturted fat (bad fat). A lot of people would think that in order to lose fat they will need to remove it from their diet. However, eating this macronutrient can actually help you to metabolize and burn more fat. With this being said, everyone needs a healthy balance of the three macronutrients; protein, fats, and carbs in their diet.  It is best to meet your protein needs first and then adjust your fat and carbohydrate intake accordingly.  Eating more protein and essential fat means eating less carbohydrates.  This will reduce your overall insulin (fat cell creator and storer) levels. Lower insulin levels allow your body to use fat cells for energy and fuel your muscles during your workout instead of storing them in your body.

2. Avoid eating “white foods”
White foods refer to processed and/or refined foods such as white flour, white rice, white sugar, white bread, pasta, crackers, and cereal. This excludes foods such as onions, cauliflower, and white beans; this is because these are natural foods and they rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients.  On the other end of the spectrum, processed ”white foods” have been stripped of their nutritional value and have almost no health benefits.  While these foods may taste good, they are not satisfying to the body and therefore leave you over fed and undernourished. This means you will be hungry because your body is craving the nutrients it is not receiving, this usually leads to over eating and eventual weight gain. So be sure to stay away from processed foods and instead eat more whole and natural foods to deliver much needed nutrients to your cells.

3. Cook with more herbs and spices instead of cooking with salts
We get an overwhelming amount of sodium in our diets. Too much sodium causes water retention, higher blood pressure, and can lead to athlersclorosis (hard arteries). In order to aviod this, it is best to cook with more herbs and spices instead. This is because herbs and spices provide healthy antioxidants, boost the metabolism, detox the body, and aide in weight loss. Cooking with too much salt and consuming it for too long without exercise wil increase blood pressure and lead to heart disease. Herbs and spices such as: garlic powder, ginseng, mint leaves, curry, cumin, basil, allspice, caynne pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg or ginger to name a few while having health benefits can also replace the taste of salt.  Cooking with herbs and spices can help with weight loss.

1 Common Weight Loss Misconception

Once I begin training people, it is often that I hear my clients say that they didn’t eat anything during the day because they are trying to “lose weight”. This has to be one of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to weight loss today for two reasons. First because our body has its own survival mechanism for periods of low caloric intake When you don’t eat food your body has to work and survive with little to no calories. In response to this our bodies go into “famine” or survival mode and the body will slow its metabolism (the rate at which your body burns calories at rest) down in order to hold onto any incoming calories in order to protect itself. Instead of starving ourselves, it is better to eat several properly portioned meals a day within two to three hours of one another in order to keep our bodies out of survival mode.  This will also boost our metabolism and burn calories that will be used for energy. Once you train your body to eat this way,  your body will be able to produce and utilize more energy for all daily activities. Second, we have to understand that calories are a measurement for the amount of energy that is inside anything we eat/and or drink. So it is important to fuel our bodies with proper nutrition in order for us to have energy to carry out our everyday functions. Eating more regularly is how we will properly lose weight, not by starving our body.

The Kiss List

what can.jpg

Now we all know the obvious answer to this, but there are more benefits to kissing than just getting you hot and bothered.

Some even say that the way their partner kisses can be a serious make or break in their relationship…YIKES! The thought of sharing such a vulnerable moment with someone special can make you feel many different ways…

Some feel like they are part of a love story… while the rest may feel like a bundle of nerves.

Thankfully kissing has some awesome health benefits, and if you have been kissed, then you fall into one or more of these smooch worthy categories:

Happy

Hopefully you are already happy with your date/girlfriend/boyfriend. A plus is your body’s chemical response to kissing that special someone. The response is the same as the boost you get after a good workout. That is some serious couple’s therapy!

elle

Fun Fact: 66% of the population turn tilt their head to the right when they kiss…
You can stop tilting your head now.

burns calories

Not only is kissing a mood lifter and great way to display affection… It’s a great mini workout! During a heated make out session you can burn 6.4 calories per minute.

That’s something you don’t think about everyday.

This does not mean you need to skip your cardio session to go snuggle up, but it’s definitely a plus that gets your heart racing!

Eases cramps.jpg

Ladies!! We constantly hunt for the almighty quick fix for that time of the month. Cramps can ruin any and everything. When you are emotionally connected to your partner many things can happen, but did you know that your sweetheart could be your personal pain-killer? Ever heard of a hormone called Oxytocin? It has even been called the “Love Hormone” or “Cupid’s Arrow”.

Fun Fact: This hormone has been directly linked with sexual pleasure, and is released during an orgasm.

What’s the Skinny?

After a bit of observation, I have come to a conclusion. These days many people plan for holiday food more than the actual holiday. It’s all fun and games until that last piece of pie. Then reality strikes!

Let us not fall victim to the cliché holiday timeline…

At the beginning of the holidays, you indulged in all the great food & drinks…later on in the season you might be a bit angry with yourself due to your diet…and when New Years rolls around…your resolutions list might look something like this…

resolution

Holiday pounds are a real thing! Here are 3 ways to help you shed those pounds, and add a little spice to your fitness routine!

1 | Drink enough water

I can not stress this enough! Water makes up over half of your body. If you don’t drink enough water right now, this should be your jump start. For those of you that don’t like regular water…

Spice it UP! Fruit-infused water

This is what many call “detox” water, and that it is! Adding luscious fruits and herbs to your water detoxifies your system, helps with weight loss, and reduces post workout fatigue.

Detox Water Flat Lay

Bonus: It makes your hair and skin look amazing!

Some popular detox water combinations are:

Lemon & Mint

Mango & Ginger

Tangerine & Strawberry

Cucumber & Lemon

2 | Write out a goals list

There really has to be a “method” to your madness. When writing down goals, most people make the mistake of striving for semi-unattainable goals. The belief with that method is that it will “push you”, and make you work harder….WRONG. Do not say you want to place in a runners marathon in 2 weeks if you can barely make it through a mile jog. Write down goals you know are within reach, then work your way to a larger one. This way you will be excited that you achieved your goal, and it will give you that necessary boost going into the next one!

Spice it UP! Reward yourself

After you reach a goal reward yourself. Now don’t get carried away, and fall off of the wagon. I don’t necessarily mean with food either. Buy a new workout top or a pair of cute leggings. New clothes for you and motivation to workout. It’s 2 for 1, and you can’t beat that!

UA tights

These Under Armour leggings are up next on my list!

Price: $44.99 USD | Like them? Click the logo!

3 | Grab a friend!

There is nothing better that having an outside support system in any goal you want to achieve! A good friend of mine/former roommate is a lover of fitness. We made a habit out of going to the gym together, and she started a training series by Ashley Horner called Pipehitter. I wanted to know what all the hype was about, so I tried it with her…..

I loved it! I would recommend this workout to anyone who is in fairly good shape & likes to lift. It’s intense! Be sure to stretch before and after…you will thank me later.

Spice it UP! Indoor rock climbing

Your workout might be getting a little boring, and this is the time when you might need to step outside the box. Rock climbing is a great full body workout, and it gives you the opportunity to challenge yourself. Not all the climbing courses are the same, so if you’re not that experienced there is no need to worry. Plus, if you go with a friend you can push each other to keep climbing. Race you to the top!

Oils: Your New Best Friends

No matter what season it is, you want to be sure that your hair and skin glow! Nourishment is extremely important, and if you feel a little “rough around the edges” lately…this is what you’re looking for!

Let’s start with the basics shall we?

Carrier oils? What are those?

Carrier Oils

Carrier oils are pressed from the fat bearing portions (seeds, nuts, etc.) and do not evaporate. The scents of these oils are not as strong as that of essential oils.

Some examples of carrier oils are: Argan, Olive & Monoi

Argan Oil: This popular oil comes from the kernels of the Argan tree. This tree is found in Morocco. It can be used on the hair or skin. It is more frequently used on the hair as it is said to penetrate the hair shaft with amazing results: moisture, anti-frizz properties & shine.

x1388525_1388525__49990_std.png.pagespeed.ic.R-Y5ZuD9mK

Product: One ‘N Only Argan Oil 12-N-1 Daily Treatment can be purchased from Sally Beauty for $9.99 USD (In-Store & Online)

This product is AMAZING! I have used this personally on my hair when it was relaxed & now on my natural hair. Be sure not to use too much. A little goes a long way, especially with straight hair (Don’t want to weigh it down). When straightening hair, put this in your hair while it is wet.

Common confusion: Argan oil and Moroccan oil are NOT the same thing. They do indeed come from the same place, BUT….

  • Argan oil is from a kernel as previously stated (THAT IS ALL)
  • Moroccan oil is not just one thing. It is made from various ingredients, and Argan oil is one of those ingredients

_8775414

You can pick up this 0.8 oz. Moroccan Oil Treatment at Nordstrom for $14.80 USD!

Keep in mind that Moroccan oil is generally more expensive than Argan oil, but both products are well worth the cost.

Olive oil: is the fat obtained from an olive! The olives are pressed and the oils are then drained.

This oil is jam-packed with anti-aging antioxidants and is amazing when it comes to moisture. I consider this to be a staple product!

You can use Olive oil in various ways:

  • Hair: As a hot oil treatment or as a leave in (Only use a bit!)
  • Skin: Olive oil is amazing for healing dry skin. If you have issues with dry skin (especially eczema) this diverse little oil will be your best friend. It is best used when skin is damp.
  • Nails: CRACKED CUTICLES BE GONE! At night, add a bit of olive oil to your finger tips and massage gently.

image001

Product: You can find olive just about anywhere! Just make sure it is Extra Virgin Olive OilThe average price is around $3.00- $6.00 USD for a decent size bottle.

Monoi Oil: This oil is ONLY produced in Tahiti (not the product that contains it, but the oil itself). This oil has a bit of fragrance to it because it is made by soaking the petals of the Tahitian gardenia in coconut oil (soaked for about a month).

Product: ‘Monoi de Tahiti’ Body Glow II by NARS & this product can be purchased at Sephora for $59.00 USD.

Uses for Monoi Oil:

  • Can be used as a bath oil. This helps make skin nice and supple.
  • You can mix this oil with your lotion. It helps skin retain moisture & adds a nice scent.
  • My personal favorite is that you can add this oil to conditioner for added nourishment and shine.

BONUS: This oil is extremely lightweight!

Disclaimer: If you are allergic to Gardenias..please DO NOT USE this oil. Regular old coconut oil will do just fine!

Try these oils! Experiment, and see what works best for you!
